Therapy Dog Training: How to Certify Your Dog

Your dog is well-behaved, friendly, loves people. And you've wondered: could my dog do something bigger? Help people who are struggling? People in hospitals, at special events, in crisis situations? The answer might be yes. And the journey to get there is more achievable than you think.

Therapy dog training isn't about winning competitions or mastering advanced tricks. It's about channeling your dog's natural love for people into something meaningful. It's about giving your dog a purpose and building an incredible bond in the process.

Why Therapy Dog Training Matters

Dogs thrive when they have structure, clear expectations, and a role to play. Therapy dog training goes deeper than regular obedience. It teaches your dog to be calm, confident, and emotionally attuned in high-pressure situations.

But here's what really matters: the impact on people. A therapy dog can comfort someone in a hospital who hasn't smiled in weeks. They can help an athlete with special needs feel confident at a major competition. They can provide a moment of peace at a mental health awareness event where crowds are large and emotions run high. That's not just a nice addition to your life. That's meaningful work. Your dog learns they have a role in the world, and you get to witness that purpose firsthand.

What Makes Therapy Dog Training Different

Therapy dog training requires a specific set of skills and temperament that go beyond obedience.

Your dog needs to handle unpredictable situations with calm confidence. Loud noises at a stadium. Wheelchairs and medical equipment. Children running up unexpectedly. A crowd of people wanting to pet them all at once. In our therapy dog training, we build these experiences into the class itself. Your dog learns to stay calm and confident, grounded even when the environment is chaotic.

The prerequisites matter too. Your dog needs:

  • A solid foundation in basic obedience commands and more

  • No reactive, aggressive, or anxious behavior

  • No history of biting

  • Comfort with loud noises and unfamiliar situations

These aren't arbitrary rules. They're safety requirements that protect the people and environments your dog will eventually visit. We'll evaluate whether your dog is ready to start therapy dog training or if foundational obedience or Behavior Modification class is the better starting point. Both classes are tailored to your dog's specific needs.

The Dogs With a Purpose Partnership

Here's where our therapy dog program becomes special. We're officially partnered with Dogs With a Purpose, and not just in name. This partnership means your dog doesn't just graduate from a class. They become part of a certified, vetted network of therapy dogs invited to real community events.

The Partnership Difference:

Real-world deployment. Our partnership gets therapy dog teams invited to major events where they help people. Carolina Hurricanes games, Special Olympics, facility visits. These aren't hypothetical scenarios. They're direct invitations because our standards are high and our dogs are solid.

Community impact that goes both ways. At the Carolina Hurricanes mental health awareness night, our therapy dog teams moved through crowds seeking connection. Music, wheelchairs, walkers, people everywhere. Our dogs stayed calm and grounded while people leaned on them and found comfort. The Special Olympics tested them differently. Medical equipment, loud horns, clapping, yelling. Our teams moved through it all without hesitation. Calm. Confident. That's your dog being trained to handle real human needs with grace.

Highly vetted standards. We train your dog through our program, then certify and insure them through Dogs With a Purpose. That's being trusted at a national level. You're joining a network of teams that meet rigorous standards.

The Journey From Training to Certification

1. Start with basic obedience foundations. Every dog's path looks different. If you have a puppy, our Puppy Basics & Beyond class is the perfect starting point. If you have an older dog, we'll evaluate whether they have the obedience skills needed for therapy dog training or if another round of foundational classes makes sense first.

2. Enroll in therapy dog training. This is a six-week class series where you’ll work as a team. We train both the dog and the handler. Most dogs need multiple rounds of classes until they're ready for certification testing. You'll learn:

  • Safety skills and positioning for comfort

  • How to read your dog's stress signals

  • Gradual desensitization to different environments, sounds, and stimuli

3. Complete the Dogs With a Purpose certification.

After you've finished the class series, you'll move toward formal certification through Dogs With a Purpose.

Certification requires:

  • AKC Canine Good Citizen certification

  • Dogs With a Purpose Pretest (must pass to move forward)

  • Dogs With a Purpose Final Test (must pass to be certified)

The evaluation assesses your dog's health, vaccinations, obedience, ability to stay calm, and response to unexpected situations. Visit the Dogs With a Purpose website for complete testing requirements.

You'll need to renew certification annually to remain part of the Dogs With a Purpose network.

4. Get invitations to events. Once certified, you'll have access to a portal where you can register for volunteer events. Carolina Hurricanes games, Special Olympics, facility visits, community events. Karen, Director of Dogs With a Purpose, is local and available to answer questions and help with event logistics whenever you need.  Your dog's job begins, and the impact starts immediately.

What Your Dog (and You) Will Get Out of This

Your dog will move from being a good pet to becoming a working team member with genuine purpose. Your dog gets a job they'll thrive in. You get the privilege of watching your dog help people in ways that matter deeply.

Here's what's important to understand: therapy dog work is demanding. Your dog will:

  • Be on their A game the entire visit (no sniffing, licking, or reacting to chaos)

  • Be exhausted after each visit (that's exactly what should happen)

  • Need gradual preparation to build the focus and restraint required

But it goes deeper. Many owners find that therapy dog training transforms their relationship with their dog. You're no longer just managing a pet. You're partnering with your dog in meaningful work. Your dog gains confidence. You gain perspective. And every event your dog attends, every person they comfort, becomes a shared victory.

Ready to Explore Therapy Dog Training?

If your dog has solid obedience skills and a calm, friendly temperament, therapy dog training might be the next chapter for both of you.

The first step is a therapy dog evaluation to assess whether your dog is ready for therapy dog training or if additional obedience work makes sense first.

Give your dog a purpose. Change someone's day in the process.
